Zelma wanted to see her web site, so I showed her the changes I made here,

"I put that picture of a T-Rex in the shower at the top because I know you like dinosaurs," I said.

"That's not a T-Rex," said Zelma. "Look at the bumps on its head!"

"No, that's a T-Rex. It has those tiny little arms."

"No, it's another kind of dinosaur that also has tiny arms, with bumps on his head... hm... I know! That's an Allosaurus!"

So it is... maybe. Allosaurus had three fingers, and T-Rexes had two. Believe it or not, it's actually a photoshopped image of a dinosaur in the shower! (It's a fictional dinosaur, although it looks very realistic.)

Later edit: Zelma has amended her position: "An Allosaurus is a kind of T-Rex, so the dinosaur in the shower is both an Allosaurus and a T-Rex!"

100th Day of School

Today was the 100th day of Preschool (supposedly, although she went all summer so it kind of doesn't matter). To celebrate, they had a big party at school. All of the four and five year olds voted to dress "fancy" for the party. This is what Zelma decided was fancy. She wore her sparkly tennis shoes with this.

Afterwards, I asked her what they did at the party, and she said,

"It was just like we do every day at home: we danced, we ate yummy food, and we watched the Dinosaur Train."

I went to pick Zelma up from preschool today, and there were still a lot of kids there. They were all lined up in a row, sitting criss cross applesauce, listening to their teacher explain an art project they were about to begin. I tiptoed in front of the teacher, "sorry!" and whispered to Zelma,

"You can come with me now..."

We went back in front of the class to leave, but we had to stop at her mailbox and pick up her projects for the day. There was this gnome coloring thing in her box (pictured, upper left) so I whispered,

"Is that a troll or a Santa Claus or is it a Swedish Tomte or what?"

"What?" said Zelma in her usual tone. (The teacher was right next to us, pointing out the felt the kids could use.) I whispered again, trying to usher Zelma out the door,

"Is that a troll or a Santa Claus or is it a Swedish Tomte or what?"

"WHY ARE YOU SPEAKING SO QUIETLY?" Zelma yelled at me, "SPEAK UP! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

[Sometimes, I think little kids are a lot like old people.]

So, we get home, and we're still debating who this guy is that Zelma colored. She doesn't know. She goes and finds a book about Santa Claus, for comparison. She wants us to read her the Santa Claus book, but we're eating and we don't want to read aloud right now, so I say,

"Just look at the pictures and try to figure out what they're saying," and Daddy says,

"It's just 'Ho ho ho,' that's all Santa says is, 'Ho ho ho'".

Zelma intently looks through the entire book and assures us,

"Santa does not say 'Ho ho ho,'"

I finally relent and read her the book out loud.

"She's right. Nowhere in this book does Santa say, 'Ho ho ho.'"

"It's implied," Daddy says. "It's the implied, 'ho ho ho.'"

"It's not plied. Read it again," says Zelma. "We have to make sure."

We read it again. Santa gets up out of bed in the evening, she notices.

"When does Santa sleep?" she asks.

"Mostly in the summer," I say.

"Is Santa nocturnal?"

"Hm... never thought about it. I guess he is. He goes out at night... He's also immortal. He's lived for a few hundred years now."

"He's nocturnal and immortal," says Daddy. "He's a vampire!"

So, there you have it. Santa Claus is a vampire.

Oh, and we figured out that that thing she colored looks most like an elf. Now all of our questions are answered. Except for one, actually: if Santa is immortal, then who is that guy in town who wears the striped red tights, the guy with the white beard who walks with a walker? He's supposed to be retired Santa, right?

Just as I was about to take a great picture of Zelma trick or treating in front of a graveyard, a kid in a scream painting mask came barreling down the sidewalk, clearly blinded by his mask, and in my haste to push him aside and keep him from knocking Zelma over, I let the camera tilt down, and this is how the picture turned out! Zelma was a purple dinosaur and those are her skater shoes.

And then to put the plastic bags in other plastic bags and label that, too, which is how we ended up with a large plastic bag labeled, "Stencils in Plastic Bags (and plates)". Perhaps we should put yet another plastic bag over that one, and label it?

This is a kind of signature style to her art, the multimedia, multidimensional gluing of found objects onto the page in a way that makes sense.]
